Paper Mache

Born to Callie Graphics, a Canterlot Unicorn mother, and Jiyū-no-Tsubasa, a Neighponese Pegasus father, Paper Mache always dreamt of being a member of the Royal Guard. But her frail frame and her affinity with paper magic (papercraft, or kamitsukai (紙使い) as her father called it) seemed ill fits to the demanding work necessitated. However, her magic enabled her to slightly alter the bonding properties of each sheet of paper, allowing her to make it sharp enough to cut through wood, resilient enough to withstand the buck of an Earth Pony. Fascinated by the filly's abilities, Queen Celestia took the liberty of accelerating Paper's prospective application, and the spindly Unicorn became a guard-in-training at the age of dozen-two. Impressing her fellow guardsponies with her versatile special talent, Paper Mache was nonethelss considered ill-fit for common guard duty, and thus saw little in the way of being stationed at garrisons near to troublesome areas. All the time, she shared in correspondence with Queen Celestia, sharing in grosses of letters, keeping all of the Queen's letters close to her and using them in her papercraft, feeling as if she was protected by the Queen in turn by the many many letters from her. In time, at the age of dozen-four, she had raised enough attention with her papercraft that she was considered to be fit for guarding Queen Celestia herself. The process was impeded, however, by the rise of NightMare Moon, and Paper Mache set off to search for the Queen of the Sun, avoiding the rise of Endymion in Canterlot's place. Living up to the creed of the Royal Guard, she roamed about the Equestrian land, waylaying the plans of the Shadowbolts and the new Nightmare Guard, her heart burning with fondness for Queen Celestia as it ever had. When the Queen was returned and the Queen of the Night returned to her senses, she returned to her spot in Canterlot, awaiting the day when she would earn her spot at Queen Celestia's side, as her Exclusive Personal Royal Guard...

Paper Mache is a character from outside the Friendship Is Magic show or any official My Little Pony materials. She appears in my fanfiction series The Elements of Friendship, first appearing in Book IS [interlude one-point-five]: Bonds. She is used with permission from , having first appeared in his comic To Love God - To Love Mortal as Celestia's love interest. (The name of her father, Jiyū-no-Tsubasa, is derived from an important figure in her background in To Love God - To Love Mortal, Liberty Wing.) Her appearance here is derived from the work of my good friend , namely her Unique Style series. Also enlisted was 's design for Oleander the unicorn in Them's Fightin' Herds, since she represents a "classical unicorn" design straight from the hand of Lauren Faust herself. She has a great deal of Pegasus features in reference to Liberty Wing, and her frail frame is meant to reflect on how her role as a Royal Guard is more based on her magic than on her physicality.
